Music & Me

Hey Guys! I’m Jordan, and I am currently a sophomore here at Converse and I plan to major in Health and Wellness on the track to pursue a career as a Physical Therapist. I have been involved musically my whole life singing and dancing consistently within my Church. I was even casted as the lead role in my school play The Lion King in 7th grade. Fun fact, I am actually born and raised here in Spartanburg and have had a pleasant experience living down here although there isn’t much to do. I am super excited to read all about the music you guys enjoy and hopefully I can find a few songs to add into my daily rotation. Happy reading!!

  1. An example of something that I like right now: For a while now  I have been listening and falling in love with my parents era of music. There is nothing like being woken up on a Saturday morning to your mom’s old R&B throwbacks and to her deep cleaning the entire house. I would often argue with my parents whose generation's music was better but deep down I knew it was theirs who was superior. The song attached is one of my favorite songs from one of my all time favorite bands New Edition.

  1. An example of music that’s deeply important to me: Throughout my life I have enjoyed multiple genres and types of music. But the one I always come back to, and that never gets old for me would be Gospel/Christian music. Growing up in the Church has heavily influenced my decision on this and will forever be a key component to my musical background. I have attached one of my favorite songs from my baptist church, it's one that always gets stuck in my head and I learned the words from just hearing it so much growing up. This song motivates me to never give up, keep believing, and to be intentional in all that I do.

    3. An example of a music I don’t really connect with: One specific type of music I have never been able to listen to continuously or connect with would be Heavy Metal music. Its intensity has always came off as a bit much to be and is something that I cannot seem to enjoy. The song I have attached is a song that was introduced to me in another music class as we learned about different genres of music and their characteristics. This song is not something that I would tune in to daily and actually sounds like a bunch of noise to me. If you have any recommendations of any Heavy Metal Songs that could alter my perspective, please feel free to comment songs as we comment on each others posts.

  1. I remember growing up my parents would also blast their personal favorites to wake me and my sister up. I liked this New Edition song you shared. It's an interesting selection because it has some sort of energy that would totally wake me up in the morning too. You may not be a fan, but I love Heavy Metal/Hard Rock music. Led Zeppelin is great in my opinion, but I know immigrant song will not be for everyone. His most popular song is Stairway to Heaven, which is a bit tamer in the beginning compared to immigrant song. I totally recommend checking that one out if you want to give his music another chance.

  2. I remember growing up in the church and listening to a lot of gospel music on the way to school everyday so that choice of music really stood out to me because it has always been apart of my life. I also found this as my favorite out of the 3 you chose because it is so relatable to me. But I will have to disagree about Led Zeppelin because I also grew up listening to a lot of rock music and it has always been one of my favorites. Also stairway to heaven in my eyes is a classic and can never skip when that song comes on.

  3. Hi Jordan! I'm glad you mentioned growing up and cleaning the house to old R&B music, as I too have some of my greatest memories doing so every saturday! New Edition for sure is always going to be played whenever it comes to cleaning days. My grandma loved Mary Mary growing up, her favorite song was Shackles and every tme I hear it I think of her. I also grew up in the church so most gospel songs are held dearly to me as well. I really don't connect with heavy metal music much either, I have enjoyed a few songs from the genre but as a whole I just cannot get into it.
